I won’t bore you with Bible study here, but just for a set up, if I had to describe the first half of the book of Isaiah in one sentence it would be this: a very detailed and accurate series of prophesies, written around 700 BC, some yet to be fulfilled, describing the coming of Jesus Christ to redeem the righteous in advance of God unleashing his fiery wrath to destroy the wicked. As I read the book now, a number of verses therein bring Clarence Thomas to mind.
Isaiah 33:14-15 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hand from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil.
Let’s take that verse in pieces, Clarence. It says, who speaketh uprightly. A good man in your position would stand up and speak out for righteousness. But you don't care about what is right; you only care about things right wing. And you don’t speak at all. In the past five terms you haven’t uttered a single syllable. No other justice in the history of the Supreme Court has gone an entire term without speaking; you’ve gone five years.
He that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hand from holding of bribes. You are pals with the billionaire Koch Brothers; and with fellow justice Scalia attended a weekend gathering at a Palm Springs estate to discuss campaign finance reform. When you should have recused yourselves from the case for conflict of interest, you instead ruled that GE was equal to me when it came to individual campaign contributions. You consort with some of the wickedest men on earth, and let them use you as a hammer to pummel the poor. That is oppression. And knowing your love of money, as revealed by your failing to disclose your wife’s income for twenty years, we can safely surmise that you have been bribed.
…that stoppeth his ears from hearing blood. The first Iraq invader, Bush Senior, installed you on that court wherefrom you ruled to install his son Bush Junior into the presidency, to launch a second invasion of Iraq. You signed that unjust decision in blood.
And shutteth his eyes from seeing evil. You seek it out wide-eyed, gauging by the company you keep, and the things that they do.
In describing God’s judgment against the wicked, it is depicted throughout the Bible as destruction by fire, and eternal burning in the infernos of hell. Therefore in Isaiah 30:12, it is written: And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in fire.
And who shall withstand the flames in that day? The faithful and true and right. There are many fire metaphors in scripture: trying souls like gold, harvesting wheat while burning the chaff and bundles of tares; and holy men walking with Jesus in a fiery furnace.
Isaiah 43:2 ...when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
Those righteous men and women able to withstand the heat are also described in Isaiah as LIBERAL.
Isaiah 32:4-6 The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful. For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
You may have ascended to become one of the nine highest judges in the land, Clarence, but there is a much higher judge before whom you will come on your knees begging mercy. For God maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. Isaiah 40:23.
The works you have wrought in the dark are coming to light. You are a man corrupted by wickedness, and as it goes with the father, so it will with the son.
Isaiah 14:12-15 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning…for thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…yet thou shalt be brought down to hell.
