Why True Christians Abhor Republicans, Part Three
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4.
The other day I came across this excellent piece about Mitt Romney—You Know Mitt Romney Is Out Of Touch When…. I thought it merited bookmarking and sharing.
The article mentions the occasion in 2007, when Mitt was asked about his favorite novel. He cited L Ron Hubbard’s science fiction masterpiece: Battlefield Earth. It should have been The Book of Mormon, that great work of fiction upon which his faith is founded.
The Book of Mormon was written by the 'great prophet' Joseph Smith. In his teens Smith was a graverobber, plundering Indian burial mounds. After embarking on a number of other schemes, he claimed to have been visited by the angel Moroni, who revealed the location of golden plates buried in the earth, upon which were inscribed the sacred text of The Book of Mormon. He was also provided the seer stones to translate it. And that was how Joseph Smith claimed to have composed The Book of Mormon.
The Book of Mormon purports itself to be another testament of Jesus Christ. It is not, it is rubbish. It is the ridiculous tale of a lost tribe of Israel that sails to America centuries before the birth of Christ. There follows much nonsense, with undeniably racist overtones. For a more detailed and more entertaining explanation of the Mormon myth, read An Amish at Cumorah, which is chapter 3 of Drifting With Jesus.
Smith wielded his book with charisma, and attracted thousands of followers; and he amassed power and wealth and women as he led them into the west. He was a thief from the beginning: he tricked men out of money, and stole their wives; and from they who revered him as holy, he stole their souls. He preached a fable to satiate his lusts, and after the manner of all graverobbing, philandering, money grubbing, power tripping prophets, Smith died in a shootout with authorities.
If Romney believes a lie about something so sacred as his very soul, can he honestly be trusted to be truthful about anything? Even when he believes in his heart he’s telling you the truth, he’ll be lying. No one can believe a lie and tell the truth--such a one is deluded.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. 2 Thessalonians 2:11
